Internships
Legislative Intern for Congressman Greg Landsman
I worked as a legislative intern for my own Congressman, Representative Greg Landsman. In this role, I directly engaged with constituents and other stakeholders by attending briefings and hosting meetings with them. In addition, I provided both electronic and physical communications to constituents with hundreds of phone calls and letters. I also wrote more than 200 bill summaries and briefed the legislative team on which bills we should move forward with. Finally, and my favorite part, was giving tours of the Capitol! I gave tens of tours during my internship and was able to meet many of my own neighbors and community.
Casework and Press Intern for US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
I worked as a casework and press intern to support the constituents of New York. Particularly, I focused on cases with the IRS, FDA and SBA. This meant working to connect New Yorkers to these federal agencies in order to resolve any problems that they were facing. I handled 200+ cases in this role.
I also was responsible for the military academy nominations on behalf of Senator Schumer. Every Congressperson gets a certain number of nominations for the US military academies that they can give out and a nomination is necessary to be considered for the academy. I reviewed applications, interviewed students and was responsible for informing students about our final decision.
Intern for US Congressman Jerry Nadler (OH-27)
I worked as a casework intern for Congressman Nadler. This office normally only provides casework to graduate students, but because of my experience working for Senator Schumer, I was also given the opportunity to handle casework on my own. This constituency was very different from Senator Schumer, and so my focus was exclusively on USPS cases and immigration cases. My internship occurred when there was a large amount of passport requests in the system, and the passport agency was months behind. Expedited passports, which normally took weeks, were now taking months, leading to many frustrated New Yorkers. We supported constituents to get them appointments with the passport agency and to get them their passports on time.
In addition, I supported the Congressman’s direct interactions with his constituents by analyzing phone calls, written mail, and other correspondence - all to aid his legislative initiatives.
Social Media Intern/Manager for State Representative Rachel Baker (OH-27)
I pitched a new video update social media series to Representative Baker to allow for more direct communication between legislators and their constituents. This series would allow us to interact with constituents and inform them about Representative Baker’s work in the State Legislature. This initiative has been a great success and every week we get requests from people about what topic they want us to cover next. By breaking down legislation, voting initiatives and campaigning through these videos, we also help people to become more aware about local politics and their civic duty.
You can find our weekly videos on all of Rep. Baker’s social media channels!
Organizing
Ohio’s November 2023 Election
In November 2023, we had 2 initiatives on Ohio’s ballot alongside many local races for school board, city council, and more. In my hometown of Cincinnati and the surrounding suburbs, we were able to elect many progressive candidates to the ballot - and also passed both initiatives on the ballot.
Similar to the August election, I had canvassed and organized to pass the Reproductive Rights Amendment (called Issue 1 for this election) and a measure to legalize Marijuana in the state (called Issue 2 for this election). We were able to successfully pass both of these measures! I am particularly proud of the way Ohioans gathered to codify the right to abortion and reproductive healthcare in our Constitution.
Ohio’s August 2023 Special Election
I helped to organize canvassing teams and literature drops for this special election. The issue on the ballot was a proposal to increase the threshold needed for citizen-led initiatives to pass in the state - thus making it harder for citizens to have a say in policymaking. This would have disenfranchised voters across the state, so I worked with the local Democratic parties to protect voters’ rights.
This issue was also brought to the ballot as a direct response to the Reproductive Rights Amendment which Ohioans were working to get on the November 2023 ballot. If Issue 1 in August passed, it would have made it much harder for us to protect reproductive rights in November.
We successfully defeated “Issue 1” on August 8, 2023!
Warren County Young Democrats
I am the President and founder of Warren County Young Dems. I led our team through the process of chartering with Ohio Young Democrats and the Democratic National Convention. We host space for all left-leaning individuals in SouthWest Ohio to organize with us. Our initiatives are directed towards engaging young people - which we do through phonebanking, directing postcard initiatives and more. As president, I also aim to create a strong foundation for WCYD which includes a plan of succession for our organization beyond the immediate election cycle.
